720 Miles Done...Pushing On to Harpers Ferry by the 19th - Can I Do It?

If luck, legs, weather and mental attitude holds out I have a shot at getting to Harpers Ferry - the virtual half way point of 1,015 miles in time to fly back to Milwaukee to join Carolyn and Elana for a trip to Grinnell to pick Ben up from school.

Can I do it?  Will have to average about 18 miles a day starting tomorrow.  According to "the gang", that's what they have been planning all along so if I can stay up with them I think this is achievable.  Haven't told Carolyn yet, so this will be a test to see if she reads my blog :)

Won't kill myself to do it, but it certainly is a huge incentive.  Everyone seems to take a couple of days off at Harpers Ferry and it would be really cool to go home for two days to see Carolyn, pick up Ben and maybe even see some friends.

Am I crazy?

  2. You will make it! Not sure where you might be but... Jump of the James River Bridge and take pleanty of water up Bluff Mtn. Camp around Pedlar Lake if you can. Bunea(Boona)Vista is a nice place but can be a very tough hitch in and out if you are depending on it for a re-up. Check out the Dutch Haus. Everyone loves it. Tye River Bridge makes for good pictures. Found the climb from Harpers Creek Shelter to the top of Three Ridges exausting. False peaks galore. Check out Rustys. It is open! In Waynesboro Stay at the Lutheran Church and hang out at the Y. Also don't miss the Chinease Buffet. Best AYCE on the AT! Rides are easy in this town. First day of the Shennies was BONE DRY last year. Don't miss the big camp grounds. Stores have any food a hiker requires as well as fairly cheap beer. Eat at the lodges too. Shennies are not flat but the luxuries make them enjoyable. I did some of my best slack-packing here (never pass up on the chance to Slack pack Warren Doyle does the whole thing that way. Did a 35+ here with a pack. The Roller Coaster whopped me afterwards though. Stoped in at Bears Den for Ice-Cream. Really cool building. Accomidations looked nice. The Blackburn center is really nice if you are out of range of Harpers at the end of the day. Stayed at Towns Inn in Harpers. It was very nice! ABC just West of the ATC if you are looking to celabrate. Hope the Rasberries (red ones in-particular) are in season for you!
