Quick Update - 600 Miles Milestone Yesterday!

Little time on a computer - so not much to say at this point, other than I am back on the trail after my two day journey to Detroit for a board meeting.  Trail has been pretty good to me of late...put in 23 miles on Friday and 24 miles on Saturday to try to catch up with great cast of characters that I was hiking with about 3-4 weeks ago.  Walking into the shelter in the fog late at night and coming across the old gang was like coming into a high school reunion!  Also, have met some great new (and young) kids on the trail that are marching through the trail like there's no tomorrow...and having the energy to have a good time around the fire at night.

Had a terrific night at Dismal Falls last night...camping right against the falls and took a very refreshing and needed dip.  Came across a hiker that just caught a trout and was running a stick through it (still alive) to grill it for supper...now that's living the life!

600 miles crossed yesterday...long way to go...but pretty cool.

Thanks everyone for your support...wish I could get pictures to you...but technology in the woods is tough!

  1. You are coming up on some good stuff! Quick preview..... Rice field shelter has a cell tower right by it. Great reception. I think I remember a fireplace in Pine swamp shelter. Also, the stretch between Bailey Gap and War Spur shelters 649-656 is extremely rocky. Raced a storm accross it. Not fun. Check out the creepy shack and then the "witch graves" later around Braiser's Knob. What are they? Nice hill-top with views though. Cherry trees when you first get to the top. Probably too early for you. Want a night alone? Everyone says Sarver Hollow is always deserted. No water between Pickle branch Shelter and Newport Road (Short walk to store is gatorade, beer, whatever). I did the strech w/out water. Don't do it. Enjoy the Dragon's tooth. Climb down in a fore-tase of daily life in NH and ME. You will love both states. Nothing to fear. Do the Home Place Restaurant. There is nothing like rolling up in this place right off the trail. Easy rides. Had my birthday dinner here. You might get put off in a corner but that is the life of a Thru-hiker. Your $ is always good though! Enjoy Mcaffe's and Tinker Cliffs. Last miles into Daleville past
Lambert's are interesting but can be painfull and grueling on blistered rain-soaked feet. If you stop in Daleville stay at the Howard -Johnson. Free b-fast. Very hiker friendly. We had ten to a room and late nights. Pool. Use of grill. Better price than Super-8 Great shopping center. Kroger is great. ABC store, outfitter and UPS all nexdt to it but closed on Sunday. Mexican resturant better for lunch than dinner. Felt kind of ripped off at dinner. Better to grill out!

  3. Bird - txs for the great and comprehensive feedback...I was going to stay at HoJos until a south bounder told us last night about the complaints from the NoBo'rs he's been bumping into...and rate is same at Super 8. Hope HoJos is ok cause there's about 20 coming off the mountain today...most are going there!

Will provide updates during my zero
